On my bucket list, but from all reviews and friends been there, it's everything but "mosquito" factory LePage tried to make it. I was in Maine Woods most of summer, AT & miles of trails, mosquitos were least of wildlife. That said, anyone who expects no blackflies in ME spring is not paying attention.

We drove up from Belfast Sunday Memorial Day weekend 2017 and got off at Medway, took Maine 11 up to a hard right hand corner at Swift Brook Road: there are no signs for this entrance so if you get to Sherman and the Irving company store you went too far. You will need a good map and follow it. There are no signs to direct you. (shame on the locals for that) If you head in on Swift Brook Road just keep going and you'll get to the "loop road". There are great moments of scenery but I felt blessed to be at the beginning of a long look into the future. It isn't all tricked out like many parks, it's just getting going. Roads are rough, services are next to nil, and fellow travelers... maybe we saw 20 cars in 7 hours. What we did see was a ferocious army of black flies. I cannot imagine hiking in that and we did not. What we did not see, other than a few cars of kind of giddy visitors, was any sign of civilization. Thank you for the great gift and we'll be back.

Absolutely beautiful National Monument!! The park is still very primitive with not much around in terms of people and cars. I spent a half day hiking and didn’t run into another person the whole time I was there. It’s a really shame this National Monument is on Trump’s chopping block.

The loop road is thoughtfully-designed, well-engineered, and built right. The Interpretive map made available by the Friends of Kahtadin Woods &Waters is an excellent guide. Trialheads and campsites are well marked. The history and culture of the region are critical to Maine's identity, and the views of the Mount Kahtadin are transcendent.

Tremendous gift to the American people from a generous patriot. Beautiful woods, breathtaking scenery, rivers galore. Come see for self. Saw a black bear on the trail, very cool.
